Home Maintenance Checklist: Before the Monsoon and All Year

A simple checklist to catch small problems early, from terrace waterproofing to electrical checks.

Small problems such as a damp patch, a dripping tap or a loose switch tend to become expensive when ignored. A routine check once or twice a year helps you catch them early. Use this list as a starting point and adapt it to your home.

Before the monsoon

  • Terrace and roof: look for cracks or gaps in the waterproofing and clear drains and outlets.
  • External walls: check for cracks and peeling paint where water can enter.
  • Windows and balconies: inspect sealants and make sure water drains away.
  • Drain pipes and gutters: remove leaves and debris.
  • Plumbing: look for leaks around pipes, tanks and bathrooms.

Plumbing

  • Dripping taps and running toilet cisterns
  • Slow drains and bad smells
  • Damp patches on walls or ceilings below bathrooms and kitchens

Electrical

  • Switches or sockets that feel warm, spark or crackle
  • Circuit breakers that trip repeatedly
  • Overloaded extension boards

Electrical faults should be inspected by a qualified electrician. Do not attempt repairs yourself.

Walls and paint

  • White salt deposits, peeling paint or damp patches, which often point to moisture
  • Hairline cracks that are widening over time
  • Faded or chalking exterior paint

Doors, windows and woodwork

Check hinges, locks and frames, and look for signs of termites or swelling. Fix small issues before they affect the whole fitting.
